Ten years ago this town was a place where you could leave your door unlocked and feel safe. Back when people still knew their neighbors and talked to them.

That was before Nathaniel Sanders, an unemployed man with deep resentment towards President Trump, decided that his online rantings would be enough to draw federal agents down our sleepy streets last night.

Sanders was arrested for threatening to kill the president "in the worst f—ing way" via social media. The FBI says he wasn't alone in his thinking but his explicit threats have put him firmly on their radar.

The incident highlights how security concerns around political figures remain high even as we change administrations and try to move forward from past divisions.

It's not the first time local law enforcement has had to deal with this kind of issue. Last year, another individual was arrested for similar threats against a different cabinet member.

The pattern is clear but it feels like no one has any answers on how to stop it happening over and over again. I've lived here 40 years and never expected to see something like this in my hometown.

What used to be just the occasional protest or heated debate about politics now involves real threats and federal investigations that disrupt our quiet lives.
