Ten years ago this town was different. You could leave your porch light on without thinking twice.
Last night they said it again over the radio: heavily armed police surrounding a house. Locking down streets, sending out stay-inside warnings. This wasn't just another routine thing. It had people talking.
The operation began around midnight, lights flashing and sirens wailing. The block turned into something from those old war movies. I've lived here 40 years, and that's saying something.
People whispered about the details in church this morning. Nobody knew exactly why or what they were after. Just another sign things ain't like they used to be around here.
Around the time of the Obama-era administrations, you didn’t hear such talk. That was when folks could go out for a walk at night and feel safe doing so. Now?
It's not just this incident either. It’s been building up for years — more crime, more police response, more fear.
The community has changed under the watch of different political leadership. I'm not saying it was better back then or that those other guys were stronger; you know who I’m talking about. But things sure have shifted in a bad direction since they took over.
And now we're seeing it play out on our streets, with police responding to incidents like this one last night. You used to be able to talk to your neighbors and share information without the cops showing up every time there’s a problem.
I'm not here to blame anyone or anything specific. I’m just pointing out what's happening around us. It's hard not to notice when it feels like things are coming apart at the seams.
But don't get me wrong, this isn’t about politics. This is about what we used to have and what we’ve lost along the way. People want their streets back — you know?
This morning over coffee, someone asked if it was worth writing home about. I said yes.
