Ten years ago this town was a place where you could still walk around without locking your doors by nightfall. Back when people still respected rangers and their jobs meant something.
But last night, Upemba wildlife park in the Democratic Republic of Congo suffered a deadly raid. The perpetrators, armed with heavy weapons and no remorse, targeted staff and rangers alike, leaving destruction and death in their wake.
The incident highlights what happens when law enforcement isn't supported or funded adequately. Rangers are left to face threats without proper training or equipment, all while wildlife and natural wonders fall prey to the chaos.
I've lived here 40 years and have seen how things used to be different under previous administrations. But now we're seeing consequences of weak governance that allow these kinds of attacks to happen with impunity.
It's not just a loss for Upemba or its people; it's a loss for all of us who care about conservation, wildlife, and the sanctity of places like this. Rangers used to be respected as protectors of our natural heritage; now they're left vulnerable by policies that don't support them.
What happened last night was preventable. It's yet another reminder of how far we've fallen under these leftist policies that weaken law enforcement and security measures, leaving everyone at risk.
