Ten years ago, this town was proud to boast every divorce settlement went through the proper channels. Nowadays, it's hard to remember when people still took that kind of pride.
Last night, a woman in Las Vegas pleaded guilty for fraudulently posing as a licensed attorney for over a decade. She managed to forge documents and judges' signatures, convincing one local couple they were divorced when they weren't.
The victim couple had no idea anything was amiss until the wife's social security number popped up on a scammer's list of stolen identities. A background check revealed the shocking truth - their divorce never happened.
How did she get away with it for so long? That woman must have connections inside the courthouse, or perhaps she just knew where to look when people weren't paying attention.
This isn't the first time someone's tried to exploit our legal system. Remember back in 2016, there was a similar case here involving forged power of attorney documents?
Those days seem like ancient history now. The Obama-era loosening of regulations didn't help matters either.
I've lived here 40 years and I can tell you things were different back then. When did we lose our sense of accountability? How many more innocent people will fall prey to these scams before anything changes?
