Ten years ago this town was different. There used to be a sense that if something happened, it would get sorted out within hours. Not anymore.
Last night, federal investigators were still poring over evidence from the Nancy Guthrie case. They've been at it for three weeks now and there's nothing concrete to show for their efforts.
Back when I first started covering this beat, if something like this happened, people would say 'the town isn't big enough' or 'everyone knows everyone'. The idea was that things were more personal then. Not so much anymore.
Nancy's family is understandably frustrated. They're calling for updates and they deserve them. But the truth is, we've all seen this before. It feels like it happens more often now than ever before.
Every time a case stalls out like this one has, it makes you wonder if things have changed too much to ever get back on track. There's an air of resignation that settles in after days turn into weeks and months. People start wondering what went wrong.
The last thing anyone wants is for another family to go through the same ordeal Nancy's family is enduring right now. It brings up questions about how we got here, doesn't it?
So you can understand why there are some in this community who feel like something isn't working with our law enforcement apparatus these days. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the old ways were better across the board - but they used to be more responsive.
