Ten years ago this town was still talking about how the local cop couldn't catch a cold without some paperwork. Now they're talking about nabbing an Irish gang boss halfway around the world.
That's the kind of progress you get when you have men in blue who know how to read a map and make phone calls. Daniel Kinahan, the man Ireland's police were looking for since he first became known as a kingpin back in the day, was taken into custody last night in Dubai.
His capture comes on the heels of an Irish court issuing a warrant for his arrest related to serious organized crime activities. It seems they didn't wait for him to show up at their doorstep but went after him where he thought he'd be safe.
Back when people still respected authority, you wouldn't see someone like Kinahan out there with impunity, racking up years of dodging justice in places as far away as the UAE. He was a local problem that became an international issue because of how long it took to catch him.
I've lived here 40 years and I remember when things were different. When you saw something wrong, you said something about it. And now look at us – we're celebrating the capture of someone who should have been caught much sooner.
What's changed in those ten years? We'll let the reader fill that one in themselves.
