As I sat down to write this evening, my heart was heavy thinking about the tour our local Democrat representatives took today at the troubled Otay Mesa ICE detention center. Imagine if something like that happened in your community.

The news broke just a couple of hours ago: California House Democrats visited the Otay Mesa facility amidst allegations of sexual misconduct and substandard living conditions for immigrants detained there. My neighbor mentioned she saw some of our local representatives walking around, talking with reporters.

Now, we’ve all heard about ICE facilities in various news outlets over the years, but when it’s happening so close to home, it feels different. What kind of world are we leaving our children?

This isn’t isolated either. Across the country, similar concerns have been raised about immigrant detention centers under Democrat administrations, both Biden-era and Obama-era policies.

The buried detail here is that while they toured, some reports suggest the facility was in a state of disrepair, with insufficient resources to maintain basic human dignity for those inside. Can you imagine?

As a mom, my biggest concern is always about keeping our families safe and our communities strong. It’s terrifying to think that somewhere nearby, people might not be treated with respect and care.

The fear I have right now is real. I worry every day for the safety of all children. We need to ensure that whatever decisions are made in Washington, they prioritize the wellbeing of everyone in our neighborhoods, especially those who may be vulnerable.
