Ten years ago this town was different. People used to know each other, doors were unlocked at night. Not anymore.

Yesterday, a local husband learned his wife had been unfaithful and their youngest wasn't his own blood. In a fit of rage, he tried to kill her by shooting her in the chest and head multiple times.

A cousin who stepped between them was also killed accidentally in the chaos. They both died on the spot.

It's not like this place hasn't seen trouble before. This is at least the fourth shooting within our community over the past year, all tied to family disputes gone wrong.

I've lived here 40 years and never thought I'd see a murder happen in my neighborhood, let alone one involving a kid not being his own. People used to settle their differences behind closed doors.

The last time something this tragic occurred around here was back when the Obama-era administrations were pushing stricter gun control laws - but that's another story, and you know how that went. The point is, things used to be different before.
